Creating More Space for Giraffe to Roam in Botswana

Dear Giraffe Friends,

In December 2023, Save Giraffes Now set out on a journey that would change the landscape of Botswana — and the future of its giraffe population. We traveled to Goo Moremi Gorge, a 4,400-acre community-based reserve in Botswana. At the time Goo Moremi had zero giraffe in the protected area, yet the land was ideal for a small herd. Together, we determined a small founder population would expand the range of Southern giraffe while also benefitting the Goo Moremi community by increasing animal diversity, and promoting tourism and education, and reducing problem bush overgrowth.

In September 2025 SGN and Goo Moremi embarked on a historic reintroduction project to bring six giraffe into the protected reserve.

Photo: The capture and reintroduction was a highly coordinated effort by both ground and air teams to ensure the safety of each giraffe.

All six giraffe were successfully released to Goo Moremi, and we are excited to report they are all doing well in their new home!

Because of the support of our partners and Giraffe Friends, these giraffe will now be able to live safely within the protection of the reserve as they continue to breed and expand Botswana’s wild giraffe population.

Photos: Dr. Liza helped the Goo Moremi rangers identify individual characteristics of the giraffe that will help them track how each one grows and adapts to the reserve.

SGN Head Veterinarian, Dr. Liza Dadone, remained at Goo Moremi for several days after the move to help monitor the giraffe and ensure they acclimated well to their surroundings. She also spent time with the Goo Moremi rangers teaching them about the unique characteristics of each giraffe as well as behaviors to look out for during patrols.
