On the 22nd of February 2024 a little male calf was born at Ruko Conservancy on the shores of Lake Baringo to mum Nkarikoni.
SGN and the team at Ruko were delighted on the new addition to the giraffe family, however we quickly learned something wasn’t quite right. Nkarikoni wasn’t letting her little calf suckle or feed.
After close monitoring the team at Ruko, with support from SGN, stepped in to hand raise the little calf, feeding him milk around the clock, and becoming a constant companion to him!
Now we are over 2 months later and the little boy is doing amazingly! During the day he goes out and spends time with the rest of the giraffe family but without a shadow of doubt returns for his milk and to see his amazing rangers who have cared for him outstandingly.
We are so incredibly proud of everyone at Ruko, and we couldn’t have done this without help from multiple partners, vets and experts who have raised giraffes calves. We will be sharing many updates on this little boy as he continues to grow!
