Updates from the Field: Zimbabwe

Save Giraffes Now is delighted to announce that we are now partnering with the amazing Bhejane Trust in Zimbabwe.

The Bhejane Trust is dedicated to assisting Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority in many aspects of the management and operations of the parks in north-western Matabeleland, including anti-poaching work, water management, and its expanding giraffe monitoring and protection programme.

Giraffe seen within Kazuma Pan National Park – where Bhejane Trust hope to monitor giraffe more.

Aid from Save Giraffes Now means Bhejane Trust can now monitor and protect giraffe further afield than previously (including Kazuma National Park). Part of this work is ensuring water holes are full and not only giraffes but all wildlife have clean water sources.

In 2024, we are scheduled to drill a new borehole in Hwange National Park to create yet another water point for wildlife.

One little story from the field:
The Bhejane Trust team have been monitoring one lovely chap photographed below, referred to as “Male #147.” They first sighted him in 2017, again in 2020 and more recently just last year on September 28, 2023.

“Male #147” – seen on the 28th of September.

“Male #147” really is a wanderer and the map below shows his sightings!  If these points represent the extreme edges of his home range, he moves within an area of around 600km2 which is more than the giraffe we know and follow in other landscapes. Perhaps Bhejane Trust will meet him again in 2024 or 2025 – but we wonder where next in Zimbabwe for this wanderer?

A map showing “Male #147”’s incredible home range!

There is lots in the pipeline and we are so excited to expand our work with Bhejane Trust in Zimbabwe!

Best wishes,

Fiona Sandeman
