On behalf of all of us at Save Giraffes Now, thank you for supporting our work and joining the fight to ensure giraffe can live freely and safely in their native Africa for generations to come. We are so happy to share some of the successes we celebrated this year in our three core areas of work.
Anti-Poaching Initiatives:
Initiated a new community scout program with Kamuthe Community Wildlife Conservancy, employing local people and protecting giraffe and other wildlife in this remote area.
Continued funding the Northern Rangelands Trust “9-3” anti-poaching ranger team in Northeastern Kenya, an area highly impacted by terrorism. We have seen a significant reduction in poaching activities since we started funding the unit just over a year ago.
Funded the repair of two anti-poaching boats for Uganda Wildlife Authority’s Marine Unit to better patrol the Nile River border of Murchison Falls National Park.
Increased the number of community scouts and motorbikes patrolling the Kasigau Corridor, an area located between Tsavo East and Tsavo West National Parks (Kenya), to mitigate bushmeat poaching and charcoaling.
Supported the Milgis Trust community scout program protecting a small population of giraffe in the Kaisut Desert (Kenya). This small but mighty team also has a training program for camels to assist in scout patrols, allowing the scouts to cover more ground.
Established a new ranger team in Northern Masailand, Tanizania, a region which has seen a dramatic and violent increase in giraffe poaching.
Sponsored training for the anti-poaching canine unit at Lewa Conservancy in Kenya.
Supported de-snaring operations in South Luangwa National Park in Zambia.
Rescue and Rewildling of Giraffe:
Rescued and relocated (in partnership with The Safari Collection) 21 giraffe that were rapidly losing habitat and access to water due to increased farmland and fencing. These giraffe were moved to a new reserve where they are being monitored and protected.
Funded necessary assessments at Ruko Community Conservancy to prepare for a second translocation of 15 giraffe to diversify the gene pool and bolster the population of the highly endangered Nubian (formerly Rothschild’s) giraffe.
Coexistence of People and Giraffe (as well as other wildlife and livestock):
Improved multiple dams at Maanzoni, one of the conservancies comprising the Athi-Kapiti Plains near Nairobi.
Cleared a fast-growing, invasive plant species, mathenge, from the banks of the Tana River in northeastern Kenya. This kept previously cleared access points open and created new corridors for giraffe and other wildlife (as well as people and livestock) to reach river water during times of drought.
Funded equipment for water pumps and fuel for expanded giraffe patrols at Bhejane Trust in Zimbabwe.
Trained and implemented Spatial Monitoring and Reporting Tool (SMART) across multiple key landscapes for giraffe. SMART is useful for monitoring populations but is also a key tool in anti-poaching law enforcement.
We could not do this important work without the support of our Giraffe Friends like you.
All our best,
The Save Giraffes Now Team
