We previously shared the story of an exciting translocation of multiple giraffe that Save Giraffes Now completed in late 2025. We are back with another update on the reserve they were moved to.
At the end of May, Save Giraffes Now’s Director of Southern Africa Operations, Thapelo Baiphethi, was joined by the national Chief Veterinary Officer to Botswana, Dr. Mmadi Reuben, for a visit to Goo Moremi Gorge Reserve. Together, they conducted an intensive two-day training plan that focused on improving data collection and monitoring skills for wildlife rangers. The training was not only open to the men and women of Goo Moremi Gorge but also rangers were invited from another of Save Giraffes Now’s long-time Botswana partners, Khama Rhino Sanctuary.

This training built upon the rangers’ existing knowledge and helped to ensure they can safely protect not only the giraffe but all wildlife that call Botswana home.
In addition to facilitating the training, Thapelo delivered much-needed equipment that will significantly improve daily patrols, including a quad bike for navigating difficult terrain.

About Goo Moremi Gorge
Goo Moremi Gorge is a 4,400-acre community-based reserve in Botswana, where Save Giraffes Now relocated 6 giraffe in 2025 to establish a founder population and expand their home range. The introduction of this herd not only supports a healthy ecosystem but also promotes local tourism, which helps generate revenue to improve community infrastructure.
About Khama Rhino Sanctuary
Khama Rhino Sanctuary is a 20,000-acre wildlife conservation area founded in 1992 to protect the nation’s rhino population. Today, they proudly protect and conserve over 230 bird species and more than 30 mammal species, including the Southern giraffe. Save Giraffes Now first partnered with Khama in 2020 when the reserve urgently needed to improve the genetics of its giraffe herd, which was declining. Together, we moved six new giraffe to the reserve in 2021 and helped halt the decline. Many babies have been born over the years because of these efforts!
