We are pleased to share news of a recent project in South Africa!

Rescuing Giraffe in South Africa

Along the southern boundary of Kruger National Park in South Africa is a small residential area that is home to a number of difference wildlife, including Southern giraffe. Unfortunately, because of the area’s small size, the giraffe and other wildlife that live there have begun to run out of sufficient food and other resources. Several smaller animals have already died due to lack of food, and the giraffe are in danger of the same fate. Left with no other options, the High Court of South Africa ordered these animals be removed from the community lands or be killed.

Rather than risk these giraffe and other wildlife being killed, Save Giraffes Now, Nashville Zoo, and Wildlifevets.com jumped in to rescue and relocate the giraffe and other animals to reserves west of Kruger National Park as well as into the park itself.

In total, 20 giraffe are being rescued from Marloth Park and relocated to reserves where they have access to nearly 5 million acres of open park land, ensuring they can live freely and safely for the rest of their days.

A huge thank you to Nashville Zoo team members Jenna and Brittany for their help throughout this rescue and for continued monitoring of the giraffe after the move. Jenna and Brittany kept close eyes on them to make sure the acclimated well to their new homes, which they did!
