Improving Water Sources
for Giraffe & Communities
In recent years Africa has experienced extreme droughts. To help mitigate the negative effects of these droughts, Save Giraffes Now works to create and improve water sources which supply clean water for people, wildlife, and livestock throughout the changing seasons. This involves a variety of activities including de-silting existing dams, opening river access points, and drilling new bore holes.
Just outside of Nairobi, Kenya, Save Giraffes Now is improving water accessibility in several areas within the Athi-Kapiti Conservancies region. We have built boreholes at both Olosira Conservancy and Swara Plains Conservancy, as well as installed solar water pumps and tanks that will hold water ensuring there is always clean water available. In Maanzoni Conservation Area, we funded dam improvements, and in Swara Plains Conservancy we rebuilt multiple dams that had been damaged and no longer held water.
Further north in Kamuthe Wildlife Conservancy in Garissa County, Save Giraffes Now has been working since 2022 to continuously clear an invasive plant species that grows up to 40 feet along the Tana River. Working with a variety of local people, we have created and maintained on an ongoing basis strategic corridors that allow the communities, wildlife, and livestock to reach the river water that was previously blocked off.
In Zimbabwe, Save Giraffes Now works with the Bhejane Trust by funding solar battery systems to ensure water is continually pumped from boreholes. We are also working to locate a suitable site to drill a new borehole that will ensure more water is available for the wildlife in the area and help keep giraffe in an area where they are not competing with the large herds of elephants nearby.
Since water is such a vital resource for the survival and development of life, Save Giraffes Now continues to expand this crucial pillar of our work. We are pleased that these projects help not only giraffe and wildlife, but most importantly, the people who live alongside them too.
Your contribution will help ensure giraffe, wildlife, livestock, and people have access to clean water, even in times of drought.
