Because only 5% of the endangered Reticulated giraffe’s range is found inside government National Parks, the vast majority of these giraffe share their home landscape across northern Kenya with people and livestock.

Kamuthe Community Wildlife Conservancy, located in Garissa County in Northeastern Kenya, covers 82,500 acres, and is owned and operated by the community. It is also home to a large population of Reticulated giraffe.

SGN first partnered with the conservancy during a severe drought in the region in 2022 on the removal of an invasive plant species, mathenge, from the banks of the Tana River. The clearing of multiple corridors to the river meant opened water access points for giraffe and other wildlife, livestock, and people. In 2023, SGN expanded our partnership with Kamuthe by funding and creating a team of 12 community scouts who are trained and equipped by SGN to protect not only giraffe but all wildlife within the conservancy. This brave scout team includes the first woman scout in the region, Abshiro Mohammed, who is an inspiration for women and girls in the communities to be more involved in conservation.

The first year of this community scout team led to reduced poaching activities, reduced charcoal burning and forest degradation, and increased community education on sustainable conservation practices and the importance of protecting wildlife.
