Dear Giraffe Friends,
Recently, Save Giraffes Now – in partnership with the Agency for Conservation and Development – sponsored a series of events to engage with local communities in South Sudan. Together with community wildlife ambassadors, we are educating people on the importance of giraffe conservation as well as campaigning against the destruction of critical giraffe habitats to produce charcoal, firewood, and areas for livestock grazing.

This 3-month awareness campaign is taking place across multiple towns in South Sudan. Additionally, billboards have been erected across the busy streets of Juba – the capital city – in honor of World Giraffe Day and to emphasize giraffe conservation.

Save Giraffes Now first partnered with the Agency for Conservation and Development in 2021 to arrange for the delivery of emergency food, water, and supplies in response to extreme flooding in the region. The hope was to feed the people in a time of tremendous need, so the giraffe and other wildlife were at less risk of being poached for food. These essentials were distributed to the people of South Sudan “with love from the giraffes” and this concretely helped to promote the importance of conservation.

Ruei, the head of the Agency for Conservation and Development, was one of Save Giraffes Now’s first African partners and has remained a wildlife hero to me for his conservation work – day and night – in a difficult and complex landscape.

A huge thank you to all of our Giraffe Friends for making this project possible.

Sincerely,

Susan Myers
