Updates from the Field: Kenya

Dear Giraffe Friends,

Exciting news from Kenya! Save Giraffes Now has just completed a new borehole, or water well, in Athi-Kapiti.

About Athi-Kapiti

Athi-Kapiti is a diverse Kenyan landscape located in a critical wildlife corridor connecting Nairobi National Park to the greater Amboseli ecosystem. In recent years, the lands have faced challenges such as habitat fragmentation because of roads, factories, houses, and other human development. Our team continues to fight these challenges to promote a sustainable environment for the Masai giraffe and all other wildlife that call these lands home.

Projects like boreholes are critical in this fight and help provide consistent water for the people and animals year-round. This means giraffe and wildlife do not have to travel outside of protected wildlife reserves and conservation areas in search of alternative sources.

Images: There is now reliable water at the final borehole site, which will be pumped year-round for the giraffe, wildlife, livestock, and people of Athi-Kapiti.

The new borehole marks a big accomplishment for the region, but the project was not without challenges. For instance, initial surveys showed ample groundwater in one location, yet when the contractors drilled in that spot, they found the water wasn’t enough to properly pump. This meant we could not use the site, and the contractors had to drill again in a new location. Thankfully, the second site proved a major success!
