Updates from the Field: Kenya

We are so thrilled to share the latest news here in Kenya.

In early 2022 Save Giraffes Now was approached by the Kamuthe Community Wildlife Conservancy, a community-led conservation area in Garissa County. The area was facing issues with the invasive Prosopis Juliflora (Mathenge) plant that was blocking wildlife access to the edge of the Tana River. We helped fund the community-led activity that created two major clearings to allow wildlife and community livestock to access this permanent water source.

Recently SGN has expanded our partnership with Kamuthe to protect a population of reticulated giraffe and other wildlife living within communities along the Tana River. As part of the latest program, SGN helped Kamuthe set up their very first team of community scouts, who have just finished a ten-day intensive training course. The 12 new scouts are now out in the field patrolling for poachers and raising awareness around conservation.

We are so proud to also announce the first female scout in Kamuthe, Abshiro Mohammed, who fearlessly enrolled into the training and is now rapidly becoming a role model for young girls within the community.

We are so looking forward to a long-term partnership with Kamuthe and watching them grow as a conservancy.

Thank you to every single one of you who made this possible!

Cheers,

Fiona Sandeman
Director of East Africa Operations
